Presidio Historic Trail

The Presidio Historic Trail is sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Area Council and has a trail for Cub Packs and Boy Scout Troops.

Cub Scout Trail is a 3.5 mile hike.

1. Begin at the Presidio Museum, originally an Army Hospital, notice the octagonal addition for performing operations.  Proceed SW up Funston Ave (notice the Civil War officers' houses.) Travel WNW on Moraga Ave. past the Officers' Club making a right hand turn to the flag pole. There, you will see the two oldest cannons in the U.S. and the site of the original Spanish Presidio. Proceed to the Visitors Center in the center building, located on the main parade grounds. You'll find restrooms and interesting exhibits here. You can also pick up excellent free brochures on Fort Point and the Main Post Walk and Golden Gate Park maps.

2. Go up to the top of the parade ground SW corner and proceed with a right turn on Sheridan Ave. Make a left onto Lincoln Blvd (this is a busy street so be careful!) You may want to spend a few minutes at the National Cemetery grounds to examine the graves, give thanks and talk about the sacrifices of past generations that enable us to enjoy our rights and freedom.

3. Proceed up Lincoln past the stables (below you on the right.)

4. You will see the Fort Point Trail near the top of he hill to the right. Proceed to Fort Point. you can see the movie on the fort and the Golden Gate Bridge if you have time. From Fort Point, you can take the trail up towards the Golden Gate Visitor Center, which has a 300 feet elevation gain.  From just below the visitor center, the trail will bend to the right and become the Coastal Trail.

5. Take the Coastal Trail to Baker Beach. The north section of Baker Beach is clothing optional so it should be avoided. Do not take the first beach entrance on the Coastal Trail (Never Ending Stairs), it will take you to this section of Baker Beach. 

6. Take the second beach entrance and proceed to Battery Chamberlain for pick up. Total distance of about 3.5 miles for Cubs.

 

Boy Scout Trail

From Fort Point, you can take the trail up towards the Golden Gate Visitor Center, which has a 300 feet elevation gain and you can hike up to the Golden Gate Bridge. You can hike across to the center of the Golden Gate Bridge and then return to the trail and head back on the trail.   From just below the visitor center, the trail will bend to the right and become the Coastal Trail.

Camping:

Overnight Camping is not a requirement for this badge, but is available at Rob Hill Campground.  The campsite is open all year. The campground offers two group campsites (maximum 30 campers each). Reservations can be made through the Presidio Trust Special Events Office.  For More Information on this campground please call (415) 561-5444. Another option, if you're cycling, is to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge to Battery Chamberlain, located at Baker Beach. For More Information on this campground please call (415) 556-1070. The cost for Battery Chamberlain is $30 for 2 nights and space is limited to 25 people.
